The huge success of The Dark Night trilogy laid the groundwork for several major projects on the Warner side. Projects that have become the foundation of the DC cinematic universe that opened on Man of Steel, followed by Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, or even Shazam, not to mention the Justice League trilogy. Batman for his part was to make an appearance in several DCEU films including those mentioned above, or in the Justice League. We knew from the start that a Batman solo film would accompany this set.

The Batman: release date

The official release date for The Batman has been confirmed for October 1, 2021, in the United States. Warner Bros. initially planned to release it sometime in the summer of 2021, but like many Hollywood productions, shooting on the movie was interrupted due to the coronavirus. DC announced in early 2019 that The Batman would be released on June 25, 2021, nearly four years after Bruce Wayne was last seen onscreen in Justice League 2017.

To return to the filming, it had started in London in January 2020. Due to the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was interrupted on March 14, 2020. Only 25% of the film had been shot at that time. Filming resumed in early September but was cut off again a few days later after Robert Pattinson tested positive for COVID-19.

The Batman: synopsis

After wearing the black knight’s carp in three films, namely Batman v Superman, The Suicide Squad, or even Justice League, Ben Affleck made the decision to give up the role in the solo Batman movie. It was ultimately Robert Pattinson who was chosen by Warner to replace him.

Ben Affleck was originally to be at the center of the film by wearing several hats, those of director, producer, but also of the actor. But even before giving up the lead role, he had already announced that he was giving up directing the movie. In February 2017, Matt Reeves is chosen to direct and co-produce the movie.

The Batman: what do we know about the plot?

The film does not yet have an official synopsis. However, a lot is known about the structure of the script. First off, Matt Reeves confirmed in July 2020 that the movie is set outside of the DCEU and therefore does not appeal to the notion of the multiverse in theaters. The story will focus on Bruce Wayne’s debut as the masked vigilante in Gotham City. Don’t expect the script to rehash Batman’s original story, however. We go back to Year Two, the second year of the superhero’s career.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Reeves said that The Batman storyline will focus on a “dark narrative” of the character’s adventures and will particularly explore Bruce Wayne’s detective skills which were not sufficiently emphasized in the movies so far. Reeves has promised to send Pattinson’s Batman on a journey where he goes hunting down criminals and tries to solve a crime. We will experience a totally different emotional arc than what previous films have accustomed us to.

The Batman: trailer

On February 14, 2020, a teaser video for The Batman was uploaded by Matt Reeves himself. The video slowly reveals the new Batman played by Robert Pattinson. We thus discovered for the first time, the vigilante in his new guise.

On August 22, 2020, with the occasion of the DC Fandom, we discovered the first trailer for The Batman which reveals in more detail the Pattinson in the skin of the vigilante in a darker version. We also see Jeffrey Wright who plays the Commissioner James Gordon or Zoe Kravitz in the role of Catwoman.

The Batman: casting

It has long been known that Robert Pattison replaces Ben Affleck in the costume of the masked vigilante of Gotham. His choice did not take too long to prevail and was also very quick after he participated in a casting that pitted him against actor Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class). It was in May 2019, shortly before Pattinson’s official signing.

Actress Zoe Kravitz was later confirmed to play the role of Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) will play Commissioner Gordon. The Penguin will be played by Colin Farrell. Here is the full cast so far, with the roles formalized.
